Some years ago, petitioners resolved to build a
hospital in Kowloon for the benefit of the sick, who might
require free medical attendance and medicines, and to carry out
their purpose they were fortunate enough to obtain the co-
-operation and strenuous assistance of Your Honour.
Later the Directors of the Tung a Hospital anthe
leading members of the cormunity raised subscriptions to the
amount of more than $80,000 and thereby supplied the petitioners
with the necessary funds. A suitable site at Yaumati was grant-
-ed by His Excellency Sir Matthew Nathan the late Governor; Mr.
Bird was engaged to design the building; and the work has now
been placed in the hands of a contractor, and it is expected
that the hospital buildings will be completed within two years.
All kinds of diseases serious or light and including plague,
will be treated there, but apparently small-pox cases cannot
consistently with the laws of hygiene be admitted into the same
hospital therefore there still remains a need for a separate
hospital for small-pox.
When it was proposed recently to build a small-pox
hospital in Hongkong, between $60,000 and $70,000 were collect-
-ed by subscription; but as the Government has graciously
sanctioned the use of the Kennedy Town Infectious Disease
Hospital for a Small-pox Hospital, a new building is no longer
required, and there ought to be a large balance in hand. On the
5th.
